How to Raise Resilient Kids from Preschool

Children have a wonderful capacity to represent the best of humanity. They are born kinder, braver, more inquisitive, and happier. As they grow old, it is the responsibility of the child’s parents, educators, and by extension, society, to preserve and nurture this streak.

Resilience is another of these traits so abundantly found in children. Resilient children are those who despite all problems in their life shall troubleshoot or fight the problems with equal strength before giving up.

It has been found that most resilient children try to solve the problem before giving up or surrendering. This particular capacity is very rare among kids or young adults.

As it is impossible to always protect kids or children from adversities, there are some techniques which can make them independent and strong to face the adversities of life

  • The concept of having a role model

It is very important that children or kids have a certain role model in terms of their parents or any other such ideal personality which shall influence them to be strong and independent throughout their lives. When questions regarding role models have been asked to toddlers regarding their role model, most of them would at least answer it to be their parents or siblings.

  • It is human to make mistakes

Kids need to know that it is perfectly fine to make errors or mistake as they will be able to learn from their own mistakes and errors.  And thus, become more resilient or strong in life.

  • Rewards and recognition

This is yet another important factor when it comes to making kids or children stronger and more resilient. If a child scores in school tests, their parents should adequately appreciate and encourage their efforts and initiative by gifting them stationery or their school needs.

  • Problem-solving

This mannerism is unique to resilient kids or adults as they do not give up easily without getting a proper solution or completely solving the problem altogether.

All of these factors are major drivers for encouraging and making a particular kid resilient in their own unique way. However, there are a few more factors which need to be considered in order to be resilient enough.

  • Every need is not important

Restrictions are an important part of a child’s upbringing. It is important to draw lines about what your child is allowed to have or do, and what is unacceptable. This helps build character, acceptance, and resilience. Learning how to handle tantrums and differentiate needs from wants is an important distinction that parents need to learn to make.

  • Skills taught to kids shall be strong

The skills being taught to kids should be in such a manner that they should be robust enough to solve all their problems practically as well as theoretically. For example, dividing chocolates equally between friends can be used to help teach empathy, fairness, sportsmanship, and a sense of character. This serves as a great companion to a number of other traits as well, such as learning simple mathematics, or making new friends, or learning to reason things out for themselves.

Hence, these are a few factors which should be kept in mind to make a kid or young adult resilient towards all the relative factors of the world. Parents should keep in mind that as the kids or children grow, they shall demand a specific set of explanations to what they are being told to follow or be advised. The set of explanations and parental advice also contribute to their resilience in a huge way.
